- Easy to Make - To make this simple French toast recipe, all you need to do is make the batter, dip the bread into it, place chocolate in between two slices and fry. That really is how simple it is.
- Allergy Friendly & Plant Based - This vegan chocolate French toast recipe is fully vegan and dairy free.
Ingredient Notes
- Cornstarch - This underrated ingredient is used as a thickener in this recipe. Without the cornstarch, the French toast batter would be too thin and therefore, the texture of the French toast won't be right. The cornstarch is the ingredient that causes the outside of the toast to become super crispy and golden brown like my vegan strawberry cheesecake tacos.
- Maple syrup - I tried to limit the amount of refined sugar in this recipe. In the past I've always used granulated sugar inside my French toast batters. This time I went for maple syrup which is such a tasty alternative.
- Ground cinnamon - Cinnamon is an all-round brilliant ingredient to use in breakfast recipes. I often like to add it to the batter when making my vegan high protein banana pancakes and vegan biscoff pancakes.
- Thick white bread - The bread which you use needs to be thick so that it can withstand being dipped into the batter.
- Vegan chocolate bars - I for this recipe, I chose to use the Nomo chocolate bar as it melts really well. Any chocolate which melts nicely, including baking-specific chocolate bars are all great options choose a brand which you love.

Substitutions & Variations
- For this chocolate French toast recipe, you can use a dairy-free white chocolate instead. I have tried this once and I can confirm that this will also taste great. It just depends on your own personal preferences. The method for the recipe remains the same, no matter which option you go for.
- The French toast is almost entirely refined sugar-free due to the fact that I used maple syrup in the batter. However, to make this recipe completely refined sugar-free, you need to ensure that you're using a sugar-free bar of vegan chocolate. Also make sure that you find one which melts well. Another recipe which is refined sugar-free is my vegan bounty bars. If you've been looking for recipes with those dietary requirements, I highly recommend them.

Expert Tips
Don't dip your French toast for too long - If you place your bread into the batter for a long time, (more than what is recommended) it will become very soggy and it may collapse. You want the outside of the French toast to be crispy and over-dipping may ruin this.
Don't over-cook the French toast - If you leave the French toast in the frying pan for more than recommended time in order to make the outsides crisper, you risk burning it. People keep an eye on it at all times to avoid this issue.
Recipe FAQs
The bread was dipped into the batter for too long. Too much liquid was absorbed, making the bread flimsy and soggy.
Many vegan French toast ingredients are the same. To create the 'egg' effect, you'll need plant milk and cornstarch. Also find a dairy-free butter alternative to fry with.
This French toast should be eaten fresh immediately but you can store it in the fridge for 1 day, covered with plastic wrap. Re-fry once you want to eat it.

Simple Vegan Chocolate French Toast
Ingredients
For the French toast batter:
- 3 Tablespoons cornstarch
- 120 ml unsweetened soy milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 teaspoons maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Bread:
- 4 slices of thick white bread
- 0.5 Tablespoon vegan butter for frying
For the filling:
- 24 small squares of vegan chocolate
Garnish:
- Maple syrup optional
Instructions
Make the French Toast Batter:
- To a medium bowl, add the cornstarch then gradually add in the soy milk. Whisk constantly so that there are no lumps.
- Next, add in the vanilla extract, maple syrup and ground cinnamon. Combine with a whisk.
Dip the bread:
- Heat a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the vegan butter. Dip one slice of bread into the batter for 5-10 seconds on each side. Place the wet bread into the hot pan.
- Carefully place 12 squares of the vegan chocolate on to the frying bread, then quickly dip the other half of bread and place it over the chocolate in the pan, creating a sandwich.
- Repeat these steps for the second French toast sandwich later on.
Fry your French toast:
- Cook your French toast for 2 minutes, pressing down with a metal spatula until the bottom is golden brown and crispy. This ensures that the sandwich is properly pressed together.
- After 2 minutes, flip your chocolate French toast and cook the other side until it is also golden brown. Then fry your second sandwich, following the same process.
Garnish your French toast:
- Pour a little maple syrup over the French toast if you wish. Serve warm.
