Protein Hot Chocolate With Oat Milk

Jump to Recipe Jump to Video Print Recipe

Almost out of chocolate spread? Use the rest of the jar to make my protein hot chocolate recipe which is one of my favorite snack hacks of all time. It also takes less than 10 minutes to make this soul warming treat which is awesome.

To make this hot chocolate, all you need to do is fill up a chocolate spread jar that only has a little chocolate left with with a hot milk of your choice and some protein powder. I used oat milk. Place the lid on tightly and shake until the milk turns super chocolatey.

I love to top my hot chocolate with dairy-free marshmallows, dairy-free whipped cream and crushed Oreos. You can ultimately top it with whatever your heart desires. The options are endless!

Some recipes that you may be able to pair with this easy hot chocolate include my vegan chocolate wafer cookies, vegan fudge stripe shortbread cookies and vegan melted snowman cookies.

Why You Will Love This Hot Chocolate

    • Amazing Flavors - This will depend on which chocolate spread you choose to use, but a dairy-free hazelnut chocolate spread always gives me amazing results with this recipe.
    • Ready in No Time - If you only have a little time on your hands, this hot chocolate can be ready in a matter of minutes. It only requires you to pour warm milk into a jar, a little shake, another pour and a garnish! Some other quick and easy recipes are my vegan coffee cream dessert and vegan chocolate truffles.
    • Heavenly & Creamy - If you shake for long enough, the hot chocolate will come out super creamy and frothy. I know lots of people (including myself) love it that way. To make it even creamier add extra whipped cream on top.
    • Allergy Friendly & Plant Based - This protein hot chocolate recipe is completely vegan and dairy free.

    Ingredient Notes

The six ingredients needed to make my protein hot chocolate laid out neatly over a wooden background.
    • Dairy-Free Chocolate Spread - This will be the last couple Tablespoons of chocolate spread at the bottom of an almost empty jar.
    • Oat milk - As oat milk is a neutral-tasting plant milk, it works perfectly for this recipe. Ultimately you can use any milk of your choice for the hot chocolate but personally, I don't like milks with strong aftertastes in my hot drinks. I also used oat milk in my vegan nutella chocolate oat milk crepes.
    • Chocolate Protein Powder - To make your drink a protein hot chocolate, we need protein powder. Use your favorite chocolate one so that it compliments the already chocolatey flavors. Another tasty protein-packed recipe is my vegan protein banana pancakes.
    • Store-bought Dairy-Free Canned Whipped Cream - You can easily buy dairy-free canned whipped cream from a grocery store these days and they're great for convenience.
    • 1 Oreo Cookie - This will be crumbled on top of the whipped cream.

See recipe card for full information on individual ingredients and quantities.

    Substitutions & Variations

    • This recipe isn't gluten-free due to the addition of the Oreo crumbs on top. You can easily make the hot chocolate completely free from gluten by using another type of cookie which is gluten-free. Sprinkle it on top of the cream just like you would do with the Oreo.
    • If you want to make your whipped cream from scratch, you can make my vegan coconut whipped cream instead. It's a little healthier and so moreish. Whether you choose to buy some or make your own, both additions make the hot chocolate even dreamier!

How To Make Protein Hot Chocolate

For the full method, please refer to the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

1: Find a chocolate spread jar with 1-2 Tablespoons of chocolate remaining.

Oat milk boiling inside a grey saucepan.

2: Bring a milk of your choice to the boil.

3: Pour the milk and protein powder into the jar.

4: Stir everything together inside the chocolate spread jar.

A hand shaking the chocolate spread jar with the lid fastened tightly.

5: Place the lid onto the jar tightly and shake well until all the ingredients are fully combined.

The protein hot chocolate has been poured into a glass.

6: Pour your hot chocolate into a glass or mug.

Two jumbo dairy-free marshmallows have been placed on top of the protein hot chocolate.

7: Add some marshmallows on top.

The marshmallows have been topped with dairy-free whipped cream which is dripping down the side of the glass.

8: Top with the whipped cream and Oreo crumbs.

    Expert Tips

Make sure that the milk is boiling - For maximum efficiency, the milk should be boiling. This way all of the chocolate from within the jar will be melted into the drink. After shaking the jar, all the chocolate will become incorporated into a wholesome drink. The jar will also be clear when the hot chocolate is poured out.

Increase the protein content - If you are a protein lover and you want more of it inside your cozy hot chocolate, this is very possible. Of course, be sensible with how much chocolate protein powder you add to the hot chocolate, but doubling the recommended amount is definitely okay.
