There aren't many recipes out there which are as easy as this one. This is my vegan chocolate mug cake and each one takes just 1 minute to cook inside a microwave. Now that's what you call an instant treat!
Just because a chocolatey dessert can be ready to enjoy in no time at all, doesn't mean that it is any less tasty. Every mouthful of this cake is truly delectable.
It's super chocolatey as there is also chocolate in the center of the mug cakes which will ooze out when they're broken into. I also like pouring melted chocolate over the top of them too. You can never have too much chocolate!

- Chocolatey Paradise - This recipe is packed with chocolate goodness, from the chocolate mug cake itself, to the gooey, melted chocolate filling, to the optional extra chocolate topping. See my vegan cakey brownies and vegan red velvet slices for more chocolate recipe inspiration.
- Allergy Friendly & Plant Based - This chocolate mug cake recipe is entirely vegan and dairy free.
Ingredient Notes
- Granulated sugar - I love adding this kind of sugar to cakes and baked goods such as, my vegan vanilla chocolate cake and vegan banana chocolate chip muffins as it's neutral-tasting, it dissolves well and helps to create air pockets.
- Cocoa powder - The higher the quality of the cocoa powder the more rich the chocolate mug cakes will taste. I always like to use high-quality cocoa powder in mine as it takes the cakes to an even higher level.
- Soy milk - Although, I believe that soy milk is the plant milk which works the best for this recipe, people have said that the likes of almond milk and oat milk also work great too. Use your favorite kind of milk!
- Vanilla extract - This adds a nice extra kick to the mug cakes.
- Vegan Chocolate - The vegan chocolate squares will be added to the center of the mug cakes to create melty insides.
See recipe card for full information on individual ingredients and quantities.
Substitutions & Variations
- To give this chocolate mug cake recipe a slight peanut butter vibe, simply add 10-15 grams of smooth peanut butter to the mixture. You can even use other types of nut butter like almond butter, cashew butter and hazelnut butter. I've even used Biscoff spread from time to time.
- I placed vegan milk chocolate squares into the center of my mug cake but you can use any type of chocolate as a filling that you like. Dairy-free white chocolate and dairy-free dark chocolate both work amazingly.
How To Make A Vegan Chocolate Mug Cake
For the full method, please refer to the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
1: After you have heat treated the flour, add the dry ingredients, followed by the wet.

3: Place three squares of vegan chocolate into the center of each mug/ramekin.
4: Cover the chocolate squares with the chocolate batter. Cook inside the microwave.
Expert Tips
Always heat treat the flour beforehand - Make sure that you heat treat the flour before combining the other ingredients with it. Raw flour is inedible and can make you very sick! It has to be cooked all the way through.
Don't overcook - Keep an eye on your chocolate mug cake while it is in the microwave and cook for no longer than 1 minute 15 seconds. This will cause it to either burn or be overly firm and unappetizing.
Recipe FAQs
This recipe, doesn't work very well inside a regular oven. Always use a microwave for the best outcome.
This could be because you added too much baking powder. Make sure that you measure all of the ingredients out with accuracy. Rubberiness can also be caused by using a mug or ramekin which is too small or cooking the mug cake for too long.
As these are smaller chocolate cakes they are best eaten fresh as soon as you have made them. However, you can place some plastic wrap over the cake on a plate and consume within 24 hours.
